A Closer Look at Opal
Opal is a delicate gem that requires special care in order to keep it glowing. An opal is about a 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Compared to most household dust at a 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, opals are highly sensitive. However, with great care, opals will shine beautifully for lifetimes if taken care of properly. Opals are known for being the most distinctly individual gems - no two are alike. Their crystallography is amorphous, this means that it is not made up of crystals, and is in fact made up of tiny spherical particles of solidified gel.
