November Birthstone(s)

November is also a lucky month that boasts not one, but two beautiful gemstones representing the birthdays of this month. Blue topaz and orange citrine are the officially recognized birthstones in this month. Topaz comes in a variety of colors, but the gorgeous blue hue of this stone is the most iconic one, representing one out of two November birthstones. Citrine comes in typically yellow to orange brownish variety and has been used in jewelry for thousands of years.

A Closer Look at Topaz

The word 'topaz' is commonly believed to originate from the Greek word 'topazos' which means fire. By popular ancient Greek belief, Topaz gives the wearer strength. This gemstone can be found in many countries, but the main supply is mined from Brazil, Pakistan, and Russia. As stated earlier, Topaz comes in a multitude of colors. The distinctive blue topaz is actually mostly manmade by treating colorless topaz with heating and irradiation. Topaz boasts an 8 on the Mohs scale (hardness level), however it is actually very delicate since it has poor toughness. It is prone to cracking or chipping if proper care is not taken. This gem can't even be cleaned in an ultrasonic or a steamer- mild soapy water is the best way to clean this stone.

A Closer Look at Citrine

'Citrine' is believed to be derived from the French word 'citron' meaning lemon. Historically, Citrine was thought to soothe tempers and calm the wearer of this stone. This stone is commonly found in Bolivia (specifically the Anahi Mine), Brazil, and Spain. Citrine is a beautiful gem that comes in transparent yellow to brownish orange colors. Citrine is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale that has good toughness so it's able to withstand the ultrasonic, but high heat from a steamer could cause it to crack.
